Gimcheon
- The Three Han State
- Gamno-guk (Gammun-guk), Jujoma-guk (orally: Eomo-guk, Munmu-guk, Baesan-guk)

- The status of Gammun-guk (Gamno-guk) was elevated to Gammun-ju by installation of Gammun-gun after subjugated by Silla.
- The Period of Unified Silla
- Gammun-ju was renamed to Gammun-gun, and then again to Gaeryeong-gun to include Gimsan-hyeon, Jirye-hyeon and Eomo-hyeon.
- The Period of Koryo
- Gaeryeon-gun was renamed to Gaeryeong-hyeon. Gimsan and Jirye-hyeon was attached to Gyeongsan-bu and Eomo-hyeon to Sangju-mok.
- Joseon Dynasty
- Gimsan and Eomo-hyeon were integrated into Gimsan-gun. Jirye-hyeon was elevated to Jirye-gun and Gaeryeong-hyeon to Gaeryeong-gun.
- 1914
- Gimsan, Jirye (except for Gilbang-ri, Jeungsan-myeon), Gaeryeong-gun and Seongju Singok-myeon were combined to become Gimcheon-gun (20 myeons)
- 1917
- Gimcheon-myeon was designated as Gimcheon Special Myeon
- 1931
- Gimcheon Special Myeon was elevated to Gimcheon-eup (1 eup, 15 myeons)
- 1949
- Gimcheon-eup was elevated to Gimcheon-bu and then to Gimcheon-si. Gimcheon-gun was renamed to Geumneung-gun.
- 1983

- 4 dongs of Geumneung-gun were incorporated into Gimcheon-si.
- 2 dongs of Geumneung-gun were incorporated into Seonsan-gun.
- 22 dongs of Gimcheon-si were reorganized into 13 dongs.
- 1995

- Geumneung-gun was integrated into Gimcheon-si (15 myeons, 13 dongs)
- Apo-myeon was elevated to Apo-eup (1 eup, 14 myeons, 13 dongs)

- Seongnae-dong and Namsan-dong were integrated to become Seongnam-dong (1 eup, 14 myeons, 7 dongs)

- Yongam-dong and Seongnam-dong (Seongnae-dong) were integrated to become Jasan-dong, and Pyeonghwa-dong and Seongnam-dong (Namsan-dong) to become Pyeonghwa Namsan-dong (1 eup, 14 myeons, 6 dongs)
